OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has been rehired less than a week after he was fired from the tech company for his forward-facing vision for artificial intelligence technology. Also fired that day was President Greg Brockman who was also rehired according to overnight tweets — or, rather, X posts.
Several board members have since departed the company board of directors and, in addition to Altman, several new individuals were brought in to comprise the new “initial board” including Quora CEO Adam D’Angelo, former Salesforce CEO Bret Taylor and former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers. The latter will be serving as the chairman of the board of directors for the multi-billion dollar startup.
Changing the Way the World Does AI
The ouster of Sam Altman marked a sudden and sharp change in the direction of AI as a whole due to the industry heavy-weight status of OpenAI’s ChatGPT. In fact, this was largely the impetus for Altman’s firing by the OpenAI Board of Directors. They were reportedly displeased that Altman was “not consistently candid.” According to posts on X (formerly Twitter), it was believed that Altman had a conflict of interest as he sought to speed the development of AI while the board members sought to apply the brakes.
With such a significant innovative industry player set to slow its progress to a crawl, it’s surmised that the entire artificial intelligence industry would have felt the impact. But then came a reality check: hundreds of OpenAI employees — 500+ — signed a letter indicating that they would quit if Altman was not reinstated as CEO.
Meanwhile, within the span of just a day, Altman had been hired by Microsoft, which had sought a 49% share in OpenAI. It’s reported that Microsoft also indicated that they would hire the hundreds of OpenAI employees if they, in fact, opted to leave the seemingly-embattled tech startup company.
Then came overnight X posts from Altman , Brockman and OpenAI. Sam Altman and Greg Brockman were re-hired because, “OpenAI is nothing without its people.”
At last check, X commenters were having a field day with this “full circle” moment.
…and this image had a potentially offensive image warning on it.
