With virtually all technologies, there is potential for abuse and this certainly rings true with artificial intelligence. AI is tremendously powerful, whether it’s being used for good or not so good. But curiously, AI possesses a quality that you see with very few other technologies: “good AI” can be used to identify and even disable “bad AI.”
Artificial Intelligence and Political Deepfakes
As many predicted and expected, AI has emerged as a popular choice amongst groups that are seeking to interfere with the 2024 presidential election. Artificial intelligence can be used to create highly-convincing video and audio deepfakes as CNN reporter Kyung Lah discovered. Using free, publicly available AI tools, she was able to create a dupe of her own voice. See the video here.
Lah also interviews Pindrop founder and CEO Vijay Balasubramaniyan, whose firm developed artificial intelligence that successfully identified a deepfake Biden robocall as AI-generated. The recent robocall was sent to 20,000 New Hampshire residents, validating concerns over how this technology could create serious issues within the political arena.
What’s more, Pindrop’s AI successfully tracked down the origins of the deepfake Biden robocall. This points to a remarkable and rather circular reality: You need “good” AI to effectively identify and neutralize “bad” AI. It’s a modern instance of good versus high-tech evil, so to speak; one that has political groups scrambling to develop contingency plans and technology that can be used to help combat AI-related interference with the elections.
Developing New AI Uses in Business
Across all industries, we’re seeing an increasing number of companies developing new uses of AI in business; uses that are more defensive in nature. For instance, financial institutions are developing artificial intelligence that serves a protective function, identifying and neutralizing cybersecurity threats, with many of those threats involving AI.
The U.S. Treasury Department recently announced that it’s using AI to catch thieves who are attempting to steal money from taxpayers in the form of check fraud. Instances of check fraud have reportedly increased by 385% since COVID came on the scene, so an artificial intelligence designed to catch these alleged thieves was much-needed. In fact, the Treasury Department estimates that it recovered $385 million dollars in fiscal year 2023 — the first full year that this technology was in place.
The Treasury Department isn’t alone. The IRS is now using AI to go on the offense, combing through complex tax filing documents to identify individuals who are trying to “cheat” on their taxes.
One truth is apparent: There will always be those who attempt to gain an unfair advantage using new technology, whether it’s machine learning-driven AI or the next big high-tech invention. But artificial intelligence has the unique ability to both create problems and combat those problems.
