Nokia recently released their 2016 study about consumer retention and acquisition. Information from this report revealed both surprising and unsurprising facts about consumer security concerns. Understanding the ways average consumers act on concerns about security on their mobile devices vs. traditional computers made their findings particularly interesting.
These are some responses from the report’s survey as to how consumers feel about threats to their mobile devices:
- More than 90 percent of global mobile users said that they were concerned about one or more threats to their device’s security.
- Almost half would change mobile providers if they suffered a security breach.
With the type of secure information that people keep on their phones and tablets, it’s actually good news to learn that users are concerned about security. These days, people use their phones to bank, shop and perform many other sensitive tasks. Recent news about large database breaches have certainly raised awareness of mobile security threats, but surprisingly only a minority of mobile users have been proactive about protecting their devices.
Why Don’t More Mobile Users Protect Their Devices With Mobile Security Apps?
Not even half of survey respondents had installed security apps on their phones or tablets. At the same time, 87 percent said they had protected their personal computers and laptops with security software. Since people have come to rely upon their mobile devices as more like traditional computers, it’s hard to understand why more users don’t take action to protect their phones and tablets.
It’s possible that mobile users don’t even realize they can download this kind of protection for their phones, or simply don’t know which mobile security apps to trust. When people purchase personal computers and laptops in stores, salespeople tend to push security software, and in many cases, free trials are already installed on computers. This might not be so true for new mobile phones. It’s fair to conclude that consumers do know that their mobile devices can be compromised, but perhaps they need more education on the steps they can take to protect them.
Businesses that provide mobile apps for their customers or employees might consider offering some suggestions to keep their users safe. After all, a security breach isn’t just a threat to a user’s mobile device; it could also pose a serious threat to a brand’s reputation.
